Turkey - Iznik (ancient Nicea) and surrounding villages Two Days

+ More details

Description

Iznik, the capital of several ancient empires, is situated about 2 1/2 hours southeast of Istanbul in the heart of olive-growing country on the shores of Lake Iznik. The town is surrounded by 5 kilometers of double ancient city walls. In the 1500s Iznik was known for its pottery work which decorates most of the ancient monuments in Istanbul and which has recently had a comeback.

This excursion will include wandering the town to include the ancient walls and, if open, the Roman theater. If the journey is on a Wednesday, we will also visit the extensive weekly market which includes everything from fresh produce to scarves, furniture, and kitchenware! Sunset will be viewed along the lake where the views can be amazingly picturesque.

We will also escape from Iznik and venture up into the hills to wander and explore at least two villages - Sansarak and Tacır. Sansarak, about 18 kilometers from Iznik, is a remote farming village with no cafe, no grocery store, no facilities of any sort. Villagers still bake their bread in outside ovens, tend their tomato fields, and generally, live off what they can produce. Tacir is larger with some amenities and has interesting old architecture with a Roman fountain below the village.

If the journey coincides with the olive harvest (mid to late fall) photographing that could easily be added into the schedule.

Transportation from Istanbul to Iznik and back will be by private car. Depending on timing and weather this may be done partly on a car ferry.

This adventure is for a group of 3 persons and priced per person. Contact us for other options.
