About your local photographer

I am a British freelance photographer based permanently in Tokyo, Japan, since 2007. After brief careers as a soldier in the British Army and as a chef, I spent ten years in the music business; first as PR director for a classical, jazz and world-music label and later as general manager of a contemporary classical recording label in London. After leaving the music business in 2001, I set up my own business, freelancing in PR, graphic and web design, photography and teaching. My first trip to Japan was in 1999/2000 and since moving to the country in 2007, I have concentrated on photography almost entirely. My clients range from automotive to travel, inflight to commercial.

In 2015 I was the official photographer to the British Embassy for the visit to Japan of HRH The Duke of Cambridge.

I have been an ambassador for Hasselblad cameras since 2015.

My photography teaching is done independently of a school and since 2007 I have taught photography to more than 750 people. My workshops and lectures are done throughout Japan and I also organise bespoke photographic tours for visitors to Japan, both as city tours in Tokyo and longer tours outside of the capital. I also run workshops for the Japan Education of Art Association and lectures at Tokyo Institute of Technology.

As well as photography, I am also involved in magazine design and art-direction. I design, edit and contribute to Housing Japan magazine; the bi-annual magazine of a leading real-estate company based in Tokyo. My online magazine, Stekki, is now about to publish its 16th issue.

Recently I have been returning to music composition [currently writing a soundtrack to a short film] and to the roles of Director of Photography and Art Director for various small movie productions and short films.

Since 2019, I have been presenting a travel programme called Journeys in Japan for NHK World TV.

I travel throughout Japan for my work and for pleasure. I am married to Hiromi, a native of the Fukushima Prefecture in Japan, and we have three children: Joe (18), Ami (16) and Charlie (10).

My hobbies include reading, history, walking, the outdoors, music and cooking.
